Conrad
Mountain Lion - Male - Born: 2/15/2007 - Weight: 127 lbs.
Although many of our cats are abandoned or abused, Conrad's story is a bit different. Two young mountain lions had come dangerously close to an elementary school and even attacked a neighborhood dog. Redlands Department of Fish and Game captured one of the cats and asked if we could find a permanent home for him. Conrad was only about 6 months old at this time and had not learned the skills to be able to be released back into the wild. We agreed to give Conrad a lifetime home at Lions Tigers & Bears. Conrad was one of the lucky ones. Very often authorities are forced to kill cats like him or remove them and quietly put them down later. Lions Tigers & Bears wants to extend a special thank you to the Redlands Fish & Game Department for choosing to contact us and letting Conrad come to live with us.
When Conrad was brought to us, he had an ear tag from the Fish & Game with the number "502". Conrad was given his name by Jillian Hanson-Cox in honor of a friend Conrad T. Prebys, a San Diego developer and philanthropist , known for his generous contributions to organizations throughout San Diego county. When asked why she named the mountain lion after Conrad, Jillian said, "He is truly a remarkable person, someone I admire and enjoy learning from. In additon to being a music lover, Conrad loves animals. When I had the opportunity for naming rights of the young mountain lion that was found in a Redlands community, I thought of Conrad right away. The mountain lion is beautiful, intelligent, strong, and a survivor which reminded me of Conrad." Thank you Jillian for your ongoing support and contributions which have helped to build Conrad's new enclosure at Lions Tigers & Bears.
Conrad now enjoys a permanent home at LTB. He loves to lay in the cool grass, give himself a manicure on his logs or sprawl out in one of his hammocks. Conrad was shy at first, but he continues to come out of his shell. Conrad has also made friends with Tabu, our shyest female tiger. When Tabu is in the alley way, Conrad greets her with a high-pitched squeaking noise and will come over so they can smell each other through the fence. Conrad is very intelligent and is learning to sit, lay and go up. These commands help LTB to safely care for Conrad. Conrad’s favorite food is rabbit.
With the growing problem of urban sprawl, the mountain lions will continue to struggle to find a peaceful existence with humans. More mountain lions are being captured and there is little room left to find permanent homes for them. Lions Tigers & Bears is working to raise the funding for our Conservation Station. This habitat would allow us to be able to give up to 4 mountain lions a permanent home. In order to complete the initial phase of our Conservation & Education Station, Lions Tigers & Bears will need to raise $98,840. The entire project will cost $250,000.
