Tabu was conceived in Texas and born here at Lions Tigers & Bears in 2002, along with her sister, the late Sitarra, shortly after their parents, Raja and Natasha were rescued. Tabu weighed 2 lbs 7oz at birth. As a cub, Tabu loved to play in the pool with her sister Sitarra and show off for anyone paying attention.
Today, Tabu is the sole remaining tiger of this tiger family that forged the foundation for what Lions Tigers & Bears is today.
Even though she was born in captivity, hand-reared as a cub, and has been around people her entire life, Tabu's innate instincts are fully apparent. She is the most elusive of all the rescued tigers at our sanctuary, which is a natural trait for tigers who are primarily solitary creatures in the wild.
Tabu enjoys her mealtimes and rotating among the many spacious and unique habitats that Lions Tigers & Bears has for our big cats. In 2020, Tabu was introduced to rescued white tiger, Hank. The pair showed interest in each other for quite some time, and after a very slow introduction, they are now sharing the same habitat and enjoying each other's company. Being the alpha female she is, Tabu still calls all the shots. As a true accredited sanctuary, Lions Tigers & Bears does not breed any of our rescued animals, therefore Hank is neutered.
